Farmers who own large hectares of land cannot just get their job done using manual labor. With today’s rapid advancement in technology, different tools and machinery for farming has been invented not only to get the work at the farm done easier but would also help save the energy and time of farmers. In most cases, these machines help the farmers become more productive.

(1) Tractors

Ranging from transportation of harvests to pulling equipment, tractors have become staple machines found being used within the farming industry. These do not only help in picking and gathering seeds of harvests, they also plow and do the heavy horsepower / high torque duties.

Combines are a type of farm machinery, which are designed to remove the edible part of a grain from its stem and hull. Historically, combines were horse drawn, but as time advanced they were powered by steam. (3) Cultivators

Cultivators are those farm machinery used to cut grooves on the soil in preparation for planting seeds. The seeds are then planted into these grooves. Tractors are multi-purpose vehicles used in farms to provide power and mechanise agricultural tasks like tilling, plowing and planting, hauling, lifting, pushing, and transporting farm materials. They first appeared in the agricultural industry during the late 1880s.
Over time, farm vehicles have evolved into the modern agricultural machines we have today. Basically, they were launched in various forms from the early nineteenth century. The first one was the traction engine vehicle in 1887 and the steam-generated vehicle in 1889. Oil burning engines succeeded these vehicles and in 1892, John Froehlich finally built the pioneering gasoline-powered tractor.
Further development took place in the next decade and in 1901 by Charles W. Hart and Charles H. Parr produced a two-cylinder gasoline-engine tractor. These were manufactured circa 1907 and came to called the “Automobile Plow” given their cross over between farming uses and the motor car. Henry Ford later introduced the “Fordson”, the first mass-produced tractor in 1917. Later models of the Fordson can still be seen operating on farms even today. Next came the tricycle tractor, with either one front wheel or double front wheels that are angled outwards and closely placed to each other at the bottom. These designs were the most popular and stylish from the 1930s through to the 1970s.
Around about the 70’s, four-wheel drive tractors began to be commonly used. They are made up of two steerable wheels and two huge driving wheels, in the standard type of configuration you see today. The steerable wheels are beneath the engine compartment and the huge driving wheels are on a shaft. It’s easy to tell a four wheel drive tractor by the tyres. If the front tyres have tread made for grip like the rear tyres, it’s a 4WD tractor. The seat and the steering wheel are placed in the middle of the four wheels, usually inside the driving cab, which is completely enclosed. Because of OH&S regulations and the sheer number of tractor roll overs in the last century, modern tractors have ROP (Roll Over Protection), consisting of a metal frame above the driver, such that if the vehicle rolls upside down it rolls on the frame not the driver. The only thing required for this system to work efficiently is for the driver to wear a seat belt. Aside from ease of use, massive torque at slow speeds, and safety in handling, these vehicles form the foundation of mechanised farming, bringing efficiencies that enable the user to save time, energy and money.
Today, large broad acre modern tractors commonly have eight-wheeler drive units, easy-to-drive tracks, or caterpillar tracks. They also commonly have computer or electrical controls and are built to perform various specialist operations. For more efficient, accurate and faster farming, many current farm tractors even have GPS based devices, automated-steering systems and other computerised features.
They come in specialised types to suit a variety of farming tasks. For example: for croplands, crop row tractors are used since they have adaptable treads for managing crop rows. They can also break through rows of strawberries, corn and other plants without harming the crops. High crop farm vehicles, meanwhile, have vastly improved ground clearance and are best for farming vegetables and other crops. Broad acre machines such as those designed for farming wheat are employed for intense fieldwork like plowing and tasks requiring long hours and high horsepower. Utility tractors, however, come in smaller sizes and thus are recommended for other agricultural activities like landscaping, gardening and planting, which require a smaller engine and so around which a smaller tractor can be built.
